        Freely Defined

Freedom is the courage to carry fear.
Being alive has invented faith.
The gecko—called shougong, the palace-guard—keeps to the wall.

Freedom is the digestion of mystery.
Chaos birthed our universe out of wedlock.
Lately I’ve begun to relish street photography.

Freedom is resetting every measure to zero.
Numbers have rewritten our moods.
The city still keeps its market at noon.

Freedom is freedom’s self-liberation.
Unrequited love has unrequited human thought.
The soul is secretly plotting an escape.

—— A finely detailed pen-and-ink drawing by Lumicat: the gecko, also called shougong.
Each night they perch on the earthen wall of the Earthinking Towsiunn House, quietly watching me write poems.
Their round, marble eyes seem like mobile, real-time lenses installed in our human world by a higher-dimensional realm.
Maybe I'm just a Truman—Truman of The Truman Show—who writes poems to pass the time in the evenings when I'm bored, and Gecko was my first, and sometimes only, reader.
